How to Install an Adjustable Bed at Home

With Sleep Sophie, you don't install the bed yourself — delivery and installation are done by Sleep Sophie's own team, free, anywhere in Australia. The team delivers the bed, assembles the base, fits the mattress and sets it up ready to use. It's worth thinking about room access and power point location before your delivery date.

That's genuinely different from most furniture delivery, where a flat-pack box gets left at your door and the assembly is on you. Because an adjustable base has motors, a remote and moving sections, Sleep Sophie treats installation as part of the product rather than an optional extra — which also means there are a few things worth checking on your end before the team arrives.

Do you need to install an adjustable bed yourself?

No. Every Sleep Sophie adjustable bed, HiLo bed and lift recliner is delivered and installed by our own team, anywhere in Australia, at no extra cost. You don't need tools, assembly experience or a second pair of hands — the team handles the base, the mattress and the final setup in your room.

That's worth flagging because plenty of adjustable-bed buying guides written for other markets assume a self-assembly process — cam locks, packed motors, cable runs you connect yourself. None of that applies here. If you've been putting off buying because you're picturing a weekend spent with an Allen key, that's not what the Sophie process looks like.

What does Sleep Sophie's free installation actually include?

The installation team delivers the base and mattress, assembles the base in your room, fits the mattress on top and sets the whole bed up ready to use before they leave. Sophie beds sit on a six-leg base. On the standard adjustable bed, the base height — between 47.5cm and 65cm, floor to base — is set during installation rather than something you adjust yourself afterwards. The HiLo is different: its whole-bed height is powered, so you raise and lower it from the remote.

On the standard adjustable bed, if you later decide the height isn't quite right for your room or your transfers, contact our team to have it reviewed — it's not a setting you'd change with a tool at home.

What should you check about your room before the installation date?

The main thing worth doing in advance is a straightforward space check: measure your doorways, hallway width, any tight corners, and stairs the bed base and mattress will need to travel through on the way to your bedroom. A base and mattress take up more room moving through a corridor than they do once they're set up flat in a bedroom, so a narrow stairwell or an awkward turn is worth knowing about ahead of time rather than discovering on the day.

It's also worth locating a power point near where the bed will sit, since the base runs on mains power. If access is tight — a narrow stairwell, a tight corner, a lift with a small door — mention it when you book, so the team knows what they're working with before they turn up.

Floor loading is worth a mention too, particularly upstairs or in older homes. A standard Sophie adjustable bed carries a 320kg weight rating, and the HiLo range and Embrace lift recliners are rated to 250kg — figures that describe what the bed is rated to carry, not your floor. If you have any concerns about an upstairs room in an older build, it's a reasonable thing to raise with your installer or a builder before delivery day, rather than after.

Does the mattress and base get set up in one visit?

Yes. Delivery, base assembly and mattress fitting all happen in the one visit, and the team doesn't leave until the bed is set up and ready to use. There's no separate mattress delivery to coordinate and no second appointment to book.

One detail worth knowing if you're thinking of keeping your current mattress: a traditional inner-spring mattress can be permanently damaged by a single bend — even one fold during a house move or a delivery mishap can ruin the springs so the mattress won't lie flat again. Sophie's own mattresses are built to flex with the base instead, which is why our installers fit them as standard on every Sophie electric adjustable bed. If you're wondering whether your current mattress would survive going onto an adjustable base at all, our guide on whether adjustable beds ruin mattresses covers compatibility in more detail.

What if you're installing a bed for someone recovering from surgery or with limited mobility?

Speak with our team about your timing and any access needs when you enquire — for example, coordinating an installation date around a hospital discharge, or flagging that the person the bed is for has limited mobility and can't help navigate it through a doorway. Our installers can talk through scheduling with you directly rather than you having to work it out yourself — your installation date is confirmed when you order, so it's worth raising any timing pressure at that point rather than assuming a standard turnaround. If you're planning ahead of a specific procedure, our guide to choosing an adjustable bed for post-surgery recovery covers the wider decision, of which installation day is just one part.

If it would help to see the bed and try the controls before committing, Sleep Sophie doesn't have a showroom to walk into — instead, we offer a free in-home demonstration. Our team brings the bed to you, sets it up in your home, and you get 30–60 minutes to try it, obligation-free, before you decide anything. It's a useful step specifically because it happens in the room the bed will eventually live in, so any access or layout questions tend to surface naturally, well before an actual delivery date is locked in.

Budget is often part of this conversation too, particularly around a planned recovery or a carer setup. Sleep Sophie offers interest-free payment options through Humm, Brighte and Payright, with no-deposit options available to approved purchasers and a choice of repayment terms, so the installation decision doesn't have to wait on paying the full amount up front.

What happens if something needs adjusting after installation?

If anything about the setup needs revisiting — the base height, the remote, or how the headboard sits — contact our team rather than trying to adjust it yourself. Two related jobs come up often enough that we've written separate step-by-step guides for them: fitting a headboard to an adjustable base, for anyone attaching their own headboard after the base is installed, and pairing or re-pairing the remote, if a replacement remote ever needs to be linked to the base.

Every Sophie adjustable bed and HiLo bed carries a 5-year comprehensive warranty as standard, extendable to 10 years, with the full terms on our warranties page.

Getting the setup right from the start

The part of "installing" an adjustable bed that's actually in your hands is preparation, not assembly: confirm your doorways, hallway and stairs can fit a bed base and mattress through, find a power point near where the bed will sit, and tell the team about anything unusual — a narrow stairwell, a lift, a discharge date to work around — when you book. Everything from that point on, including the six-leg base, the mattress fit and the final setup, is the installation team's job, not yours.

If you're still deciding which bed to buy in the first place, our guide to features to look for in an adjustable bed is a useful starting point before installation day even comes into it. Carers weighing up whether a HiLo's whole-bed height feature would help day-to-day lifting and transfers may also want our guide to HiLo beds for carers, and anyone buying for a parent or older relative may find our guide to choosing an electric adjustable bed for seniors useful before they get to this stage.
