How to choose an electric adjustable bed
Most people buy one adjustable bed in their lifetime, so it pays to get the decision right the first time. The good news: there are really only five things that matter.
Start with how you’ll fund it. Sophie adjustable beds are recognised NDIS assistive technology, and many Home Care Package holders fund them through their provider — our NDIS funding guide walks through exactly how it works.
- Positions — look for head and foot adjustment with saved settings. The two you'll use every night are anti-snore, and 'zero-gravity' — where your head and knees are raised to take the strain off your back.
- The mattress — an adjustable base needs a mattress engineered to flex with it; ours includes a four-layer Australian-made mattress, so there's nothing extra to buy
- Motor quality and noise — quiet, smooth motors matter at 3am; ask any seller what warranty backs theirs
- Weight rating and stability — check the combined rating of base and mattress suits both sleepers
- Delivery and installation — an adjustable bed is heavy and needs assembly; we deliver and install free, Australia-wide, and take the packaging with us

Every Sophie adjustable bed includes our four-layer Australian-made foam mattress, engineered to flex with the base. Each layer has a job:
The top layer is Hygroflex® — a high-resilience comfort foam that blends the contouring of memory foam with the bounce-back of latex. RMIT University’s School of Engineering tested it independently against four traditional memory foams, measuring pressure, envelopment, heat and friction. The results speak for themselves: Hygroflex conformed to the body up to 67% better and reduced pressure by up to 32%. It dissipated heat up to 27% faster. And — the finding that matters most if rolling over has become hard work — changing position took less than half the force. The testing was carried out by Raj Das and Alexander Gargano at RMIT’s Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Research Centre, School of Engineering (report AA-01-2018, November 2018). We’ve written up what they measured, and what it doesn’t tell you.

Adjustable bed vs hospital bed: which one do you need?
A standard electric adjustable bed adjusts your sleeping position — head and feet raise and lower independently. Raise your head to help to alleviate snoring, lift your legs above your heart to help ease swelling, and sit up comfortably to read or to get in and out of bed on your own.
A hospital-style bed adds whole-bed height adjustment, so carers can raise the entire bed for transfers and care. If that’s your situation, you don’t need a clinical-looking import — the medical-grade Sophie HiLo is an adjustable bed with full height adjustment that still looks like furniture. And if pressure care is the priority, our alternating air mattresses work on both.

Common questions
Will an adjustable bed work with my bedroom furniture?
In most cases, yes. Sophie bases are designed to sit inside most existing bed frames or stand on their own legs. Tell us what you have and we'll confirm before you order.
What's the difference between the standard and HiLo models?
The HiLo adds electric height adjustment — the whole bed raises and lowers, which makes carer access and transfers far easier. It's the medical-grade option, most often chosen where carer access or transfers matter, including in aged-care and NDIS settings.
Can I use NDIS funding to buy an adjustable bed?
Yes — Sophie adjustable beds are NDIS approved as assistive technology. Depending on your plan, the bed may be fully or partly funded. We'll prepare the quote and supporting information your plan manager or OT needs.
What happens on delivery day?
Our team brings the bed in, assembles it in your bedroom, connects everything, and shows you how to use the remote. We take all the packaging with us. There's no extra charge — anywhere in Australia.
How much does an electric adjustable bed cost in Australia?
Sophie electric adjustable beds start from $5,450 – $6,450 for a Long Single, including the four-layer mattress, delivery and installation. A Queen is $8,399 – $9,895 and the extra-wide Split Cali King tops the range at $10,495 – $12,295. Split Queen and Split King — each side with its own remote — follow the same price guide as Queen and King. Similar European brands usually cost a lot more for the same features.
Are adjustable beds good for back pain?
Sleeping in the zero-gravity position can help to alleviate lower back discomfort — it supports the body with the knees and upper back slightly raised rather than lying flat. Comfort is personal, so it's worth trying. For persistent pain, always talk to your GP, physio or OT — this isn't a replacement for professional medical advice, and we're happy to talk specs with them directly.
Do adjustable beds help with snoring?
Raising the head of the bed can help to alleviate snoring, and it's one of the most common reasons people tell us they bought one. Sophie beds include a one-touch anti-snore preset on the remote, so that position is always a single button away. Snoring can have a range of causes, so it's worth talking to your GP about what's behind yours — this isn't a replacement for professional medical advice.
Can I use my own mattress on an adjustable base?
Only if it's engineered to flex. A traditional inner-spring mattress isn't — a single bend can permanently ruin it, because the connected spring unit isn't designed to articulate. Every Sophie adjustable bed includes our four-layer Australian-made foam mattress built for exactly this, so there's nothing extra to buy.
