Long Single Adjustable Beds: Size, Fit and Who They Suit

A Long Single adjustable bed measures 92cm x 203cm. That is the same width as an ordinary single mattress with roughly fifteen extra centimetres of length, and it is the smallest size in the Sophie adjustable range. It suits a single sleeper, a room that will not take a double, a second bed beside a partner's, or a setup where a carer needs access from both sides.

“Long Single” is the standard industry and linen term for this size, which matters more than it sounds — it is the word to search when you are buying sheets. This guide covers the measurements, who the size suits, how it relates to a King Single and a Split King, and what to check before you order.

The measurements

Every Sophie bed size except the Double is 203cm long. The difference between them is width.

Look at the Split King row. A Split King is literally two Long Single bases placed together, which is why a Long Single is a more useful size to understand than its position at the bottom of the list suggests — half of the largest bed we make is one of them.

Long Single or standard single?

A standard single mattress is typically around 188cm long. A Long Single is 203cm. Same width, roughly fifteen centimetres more length.

That difference is the whole point of the size. At 188cm, anyone approaching six feet is sleeping with their feet at the very end of the mattress, and on an adjustable bed that is worse than it sounds, because raising the foot section shortens the usable lying length a little. The extra length gives you somewhere for your feet to go once the bed is no longer flat.

The practical rule: if the person using the bed is over about 175cm, or you are not sure, take the extra length. Nobody has ever complained that their bed was slightly too long.

What people mean by a “slimline” adjustable bed

Slimline is not one of our size names, but it is a common search, and it usually means one of two different things.

• A narrow bed — someone with a small room who wants the smallest footprint available. That is a Long Single at 92cm wide.
• A low-profile bed — someone worried an adjustable base will sit too high, or look bulky in the room. That is a height question rather than a width one, and it has a straightforward answer: the Sophie base sits on six legs with the height set anywhere between 47.5cm and 65cm, floor to base, chosen at installation. It is set to suit the person using it, not to a factory default.

Worth knowing if the second one is your concern: a common reason people ask for a lower bed is getting on and off it safely, and bed height genuinely matters for that. If the person using the bed needs to transfer in and out with assistance, the HiLo range lowers and raises the whole bed rather than just adjusting at installation, which is a different tool for that job.

Who a Long Single suits

• One person, one bed. The obvious case, and the most common.
• Small rooms. At 92cm wide it will go where a double will not, and it leaves floor space around it — which matters if a walking frame or a wheelchair has to get past.
• Carer access from both sides. A narrower bed placed away from the wall can be reached from either side, which a wide bed pushed into a corner cannot.
• A second bed beside a partner's. Two Long Singles give each person their own base and their own remote, with no compromise on position and no movement transferred across. That is the same configuration as a Split King, and you can arrive at it either by buying a Split King or by two people choosing independently.
• A spare or care room. Somewhere a bed is needed but a large one would dominate the space.

Sheets and bedding

This is where the name earns its keep. Search for “long single” fitted sheets, not “single” — a standard single fitted sheet is cut for a 188cm mattress and will fight you on a 203cm one. Long Single bedding is a normal, widely stocked Australian linen size and you will not have to go anywhere specialist for it.

Two other things worth knowing on an adjustable bed. Deep-pocket fitted sheets stay put far better than shallow ones, because the sheet has to cope with the mattress bending. And a flat sheet and doona are best left loose at the foot rather than tucked in, since anything tucked under the mattress restricts how the foot section lifts.

• Measure the room, not just the bed. Allow for the door swing and for getting past the bed with whatever has to get past it.
• Measure your existing bed frame if you plan to keep it. An adjustable base needs to sit inside the frame with clearance to articulate.
